I was inside this hotel a couple of times in 2005, The hotel which was built in 1888 and had undergone many changes and had been allowed to deteriorate still held the feeling of past events as I ascended the wide staircase. The original Empress Hotel advertised that patrons could access Union Station within less than 10 minutes by rapid streetcar. In the 20th century the hotel was bought over by the Edison Group, with Thomas Edison as prime investor. It was said that some of Edison's research work was conducted on the upper floors of the hotel at that time.
In 2008 the building was designated a heritage property. Afterwards, shoddy renovation work resulted in a partial collapse of the north side of the building. Although a demolition permit was refused, an arsonist set the building alight, which resulted in the building's total destruction.
Brent Arlitt resides in downtown Toronto, and enjoys seeing the endless possibilities for conveying the wonder and joy of being into his paintings. Brent has always had a keen interest in art and photography. In the past few years, he has participated in a number of courses and workshops in oil painting, watercolour and acrylics. Some of his most enjoyable painting experiences have involved pleine air painting at locations such as Grand Manan Island NB, Jekyll Island GA, Haliburton ON, Thornbury ON, in the City of Toronto, and numerous other locations.
